St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance is inspired today by an 8-year-old girl who decided she wanted to help feed Arizona’s hungry. Jessica Kavanagh came up with the idea that during the holiday season, she wanted to help to raise food and funds for the Food Bank.
She set a goal of collecting 5,000 meals, and with the help of her father, Ed, they began their food drive. They coordinated with various events, including car shows and motorcross races, to get their attendees to donate. Jessica spoke with her orthodontist, Woolavers Clearsmiles, and dentist, Valley Dental Care, and got them on board. Her school, Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary, also agreed to dedicate the month of December to raise donations.
The largest donation of $2,000 came from Dave Hoffman and Bob Sheppard of Southwest Energy Systems.
With donations still coming in from her elementary school, through the touch of an eight year old, they have already shattered their goal of 5,000. So far their food drive has brought in enough food and funds for St. Mary’s to distribute almost 22,000 meals!
Thank you Jessica! With the help of young people like you, we are working to alleviate hunger in Arizona.
